What is a reach forklift?
Written by Steve Thompson
A reach forklift is a common and valuable piece of equipment for warehouses, sorting centers, and other work sites where a forklift must navigate narrow aisles. Since they are smaller and more flexible than other types of forklifts, reach trucks are compatible with most warehouse designs and can be used for a variety of tasks.
Key features for your reach forklift
When shopping for a reach forklift, it is important to consider the tasks it will need to perform. This often means consulting with workers who will operate the lift to find out the necessary dimensions and weight capacities. Additionally, because most of these tools are electric, they will need a place to be charged between uses, so be sure you’ve got space set aside. And keep in mind that you'll need to decide whether you're renting, forklift leasing, or buying the reach forklift used or new.
A reach truck can be either two-way or four-way, which refers to the directions in which it can be maneuvered. Four-way trucks are more versatile and are practical for extremely tight spaces where maximum storage is necessary both horizontally and vertically.
Consider also the driver compartment. Is the seat equipped with a tilt feature? How accessible are the controls? If driver comfort is an issue, look for trucks with an arm rest for ease of operation and a contoured seat that won't become painful during prolonged use.
Size and function
There are many different types of reach forklifts available; you will need to find a model that will support the items you intend to move. A reach truck is designed to reach forward with its arm, such as into a storage aisle, to retrieve whatever is needed. The reach length is one of the most important things to consider.
Weight and height capacities are also important, particularly in a warehouse environment. If the reach truck is unable to reach your tallest racks or pallets, it will be pretty useless. Of course, many business owners choose to purchase different reach trucks for different tasks.
Safety issues
When operating any machinery in the workplace, safety should be a top priority. Before buying a reach forklift, business owners should consider the safety features available. For example, clear visibility is essential; an unobstructed view mast means that operators can see all around them and therefore avoid any collisions or other accidents.
Some reach forklifts come with safety features such as foot pedals that must be pushed for the truck to be operational. After you've purchased your reach truck, make sure all employees are instructed in its use and are familiar with its safety features.
